Court Sentences Boko Haram Member To Death Over Maiduguri Attacks

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced a Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri.

Newsextra24 reports that Justice James Omotosho gave the ruling after finding him guilty on several counts linked to terrorism.

The court also handed him a life jail term on one of the charges involving preparation for terrorist acts through weapons training.

In addition, Yarima received a 35-year prison term on one count, a 30-year jail term on another, and 10-year sentences on three separate counts.

The case filed by the Federal Government contained seven charges against him.

According to Vanguard, the prosecution said Yarima was a member of the Boko Haram group, which is banned in Nigeria, and that he remained part of the group for years leading up to his arrest.

He was also accused of receiving teachings linked to the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and continuing activities connected to the organisation.

Court records showed that he travelled outside the country for training on arms handling as part of preparations for violent acts.

He was further linked to direct participation in the 2015 Maiduguri attacks.

The government described his actions as offences under the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act of 2013.
