A 25-year-old labourer, Hafis Ishaku, was arraigned on Thursday in a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing iron rods worth N1 million.
Ishaku, who resides at Angwan bari-bari Life Camp, Abuja, was arraigned on a two count charge of mischief and theft.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that one Prince Amazu of Efab City Estate, Mbora, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on June 18.
Nwachukwu said that on June 16 at about 4:30 a.m, while the complainant was coming out of his house, he saw the defendant breaking his uncompleted building without his consent.
She said that the defendant dishonestly vandalised the complainant’s building and was stealing his iron rods valued N1 million.
The prosecution counsel said the complainant arrested the defendant and handed him over to the police for investigation.
Nwachukwu told the court that during police investigations, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of himself.
According to her, the offences contravened the provision of sections 327 and 288 of the penal code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Hauwa Aboki, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in like sum.
Aboki ordered that the surety must be a male and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
She adjourned the case until August 18 for hearing.
