The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the killing of its Benue State Chairman, Alhaji Ardo Risku, and called on security agencies to investigate the incident.
Newsextra24 reports that the association made the call in a statement signed by its National President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma.
MACBAN said it received the news of Risku’s killing with “deep shock and sadness,” describing the incident as a disturbing attack on peace-building efforts in the state.
According to the association, reports available to its national headquarters indicated that Risku had been invited by the Ohimini Local Government authorities to attend a security meeting aimed at addressing peace and security challenges in the area.
MACBAN alleged that about an hour after the meeting, Risku and a friend were intercepted at Okudu village, where they were attacked and shot multiple times.
The association described the killing as “a dastardly and deeply disturbing act,” adding that the circumstances surrounding the attack raised concerns about possible premeditation.
“It is particularly troubling that a community leader who attended a security meeting meant to promote peace and stability could allegedly become a victim shortly after,” the statement said.
MACBAN also expressed concern over what it described as an earlier attack on one of the deceased’s children, said to be a lawyer.
According to the association, the deceased’s son was allegedly attacked in a village last week.
It said both incidents should be subjected to a comprehensive and transparent investigation by the relevant security agencies.
The association urged security agencies to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.
It noted that attacks on community leaders and peace advocates could undermine efforts to promote reconciliation, dialogue and peaceful coexistence among communities.
MACBAN also extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the association’s leadership and members in Benue State, and others affected by the loss.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement and collaboration with government and security institutions in addressing security challenges across the country.
