Lifesaving Bridge unites Chad and Cameroon

A MAJOR new bridge linking Cameroon and Chad is being hailed as a historic breakthrough for safety, trade, and regional integration in Central Africa.

The $625 million structure, funded through a coalition of African and international development partners, now spans the Logone River, which long served as both a natural border and a dangerous barrier between the two nations.

Connecting Yagoua in northern Cameroon with Bongor in southern Chad, the new Logone Bridge replaces a perilous crossing that has taken countless lives over generations.

Dangerous past now history

For years, crossing the Logone River meant either braving its waters in dugout canoes or depending on unreliable ferries. Flooding, strong currents, and hippo attacks were frequent threats. In desperate situations, many locals resorted to swimming across—a risk that often ended in tragedy.

Pierre Fissou, a teaching adviser in Yagoua, recalled the dangers: ‘There were too many dangers. Bad things happened and people lost their lives, including some close to me,’ he told the African Development Bank (AfDB).

$625m project changes everything

The bridge was completed after five years of construction and a €578 investment. It was jointly financed by the African Development Bank, the African Development Fund, the European Union, and both the Cameroonian and Chadian governments.

French infrastructure firm Razel-Bec led the construction. The project forms part of the African Development Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy (2024–2033), fulfilling core goals to integrate the continent and improve living standards.

During a site visit last November, AfDB Central Africa Managing Director Serge N’Guessan said the bridge was ‘a model of regional cooperation and an engine of economic transformation for Central Africa.’

A community reconnected

For local residents, the impact has been immediate and profound. ‘The crossing that used to take 45 minutes or an hour took just a few moments,’ said Fissou after using the bridge for the first time. ‘It was as if we were living on the same piece of land.’

What was once a dangerous ordeal is now a quick and reliable journey, connecting families, services, and communities on both sides of the river.

Trade flows in both directions

The bridge has also transformed local economies. Farmers, traders, and small businesses are now able to move their goods faster, access new markets, and avoid the costs and dangers of water crossings.

‘Now we will be able to reach new markets, without risking our lives or our goods,’ said Fatimé Mahamat, a trader in Bongor.

The project is expected to support long-term food security, regional supply chains, and border economies—while fostering broader diplomatic and economic ties between Chad and Cameroon.

A bridge beyond borders

More than a piece of infrastructure, the Logone Bridge is a symbol of modern African collaboration. It demonstrates the tangible benefits of coordinated development and regional planning, particularly in remote areas.

With safer crossings, better trade routes, and a sense of renewed unity, this bridge doesn’t just connect two towns—it binds two nations and their people, setting a blueprint for future integration across the continent.
