An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 36-year-old man, Samuel Bankole, in the correctional centre over alleged fraud and breach of peace.
The court gave the order following the bail application opposed by the prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, who said that the defendant had serial cases on fraud in the court.
Oriyomi told the court that Bankole whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and breach of peace.
He said that the defendant committed the offence on Feb.20 at about 12:00 p.m. behind Diamond place of work, Ekute Area, in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N700,000 from the complainant, one Olarewaju Are, on the pretence to purchase a vehicle for him.
Oriyomi also alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.
He said the offence contravened Sections 329 and 181(1) (d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.
He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
The Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olawumi Olowolafe, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, pleading that he would not jump bail.
The prosecutor opposed the bail application, saying that the defendant had serial cases on fraud in the court, and urged the court to remand the defendant in the correctional centre.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, consequently, ordered the remand of the defendant in the correctional centre.
Adeosun adjourned the case until April 3 for mention.
