The Ogun Police Command has arrested two suspects – Adeola Mathew, 47, and Rasheed Omoniyi, 48, over unlawful possession of firearm at Ifo area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, who stated this in a statement on Sunday in Abeokuta, said a locally made pistol was recovered from the suspects.
Babaseyi said that the suspects were arrested by the Ifo Division over alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearm, following a credible intelligence-led operation at their hideout in Ifo.
He said the arrest was effected on May 9, at about 6:30a.m, when detectives, led by the Ifo Divisional Police Officer, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, stormed their hideout on Ibogun Road, NITEL Area, Ifo.
“During the operation, Mathew was apprehended at the scene, while a search conducted at the hideout led to the recovery of one locally made pistol concealed within the premises.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the recovered firearm was allegedly handed over to the suspect by Omoniyi, who was subsequently tracked and arrested by the operatives.
“However, the recovered locally made pistol has been secured as exhibit, while investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and the suspects’ possible involvement in other criminal activities,” he said.
Babaseyi said that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Eleweran in Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun Command, Bode Ojajuni, has commended the operatives’ swift response, reiterating the command’s commitment to ensure the safety of residents.
