NBA Condemns DSS Operative’s Attack On Prison Officials

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has decried Tuesday’s attack on officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

DSS operatives had assualted some officials of the NCS over disagreement about which agency should take custody of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, who was arraiged before the court and granted bail.

Despite the court’s order that Emefiele be held in the custody of the NCS until he was able to perfect the bail granted him, the heavily armed DSS operatives overpowered the prison officials land took the suspended CBN chief away.

 

In a statement on Wednesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Akorede Lawal, quoted the association’s President, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) as describing the incident despicable, adding that it was unwarranted.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has decried the despicable altercation which took place yesterday, 25/7/2023, at the premises of the Federal High Court, Lagos, between operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over the custody of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
