Music Star, Tiwa Savage rejects ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ label

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has revealed that she is not comfortable being described as the “Queen of Afrobeats,” a title often used to celebrate her influence in the genre.

Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, the All Over crooner said that while she appreciates the recognition, she does not accept the label because of the pressure and responsibility it carries.

Savage, who has been one of Afrobeats’ leading voices since her breakout hit Kele Kele Love in 2010, explained that the title overlooks the contributions of other female artists equally deserving of recognition.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.

The mother of one added that embracing such a title would force her into a role of constant humility that she does not find realistic.

“Personally, I don’t like that tag.

“It’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble.

“And secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t accept it,” she noted.

Despite her reluctance, many still consider Tiwa Savage worthy of the unofficial crown, given her consistency, string of hit songs, and impact on the global Afrobeats movement
