THE Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has charged companies in the maritime sector to ensure and uphold the welfare of workers.
The President-General (PG) of MWUN, Mr Francis Bunu, gave the charge, during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director of GMT, Mr Tim Maguire, at the Maritime Workers Union Secretariat in Lagos.
Bunu, in a statement by the Head of Media, MWUN, Mr JohnKennedy Ikemefuna, on Wednesday, said the only way the leadership of the union could go against any company was when workers’ welfare was shunned.
“That is one of the major reasons, the union will not be friendly with any company in the industry,” he said.
According to him, the union will take any company serious, only if and when the interests of workers’ welfares are not marginalised or shortchanged.
He said the union workers had been trained to give their optimum output each time they were on duty; hence, the union would always discipline erring workers anytime they were found wanting.
Bunu commended Maguire for his timely visit, and pledged that the mutual benefits from the relationship that both bodies had enjoyed would wax stronger.
Bunu said that government is a continuum, provided that GMT continued to uphold its workers friendly policies, which was the bedrock of the union’s interest at all times in the industry.
Speaking earlier, Maguire said the courtesy visit to Bunu was to show solidarity over his recent election victory and to express support of GMT for his leadership.
He described Bunu as a refined labour leader and astute maritime expert, whose immense contributions in the sector, even before ascending his new designation, cannot be over-emphasised.
According to him, the new PG of the union has integrity that has been put to test over time; hence, the quest of management of GMT to continue to foster its existing relationship with the union.
He said that GMT and the union would continue to partner, for the progress of the maritime sector.
