DURING an award presentation by the Benin chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, criticized the controversy surrounding Nigeria’s large delegation to the Climate Change Conference in the United Arab Emirates.

He stated that this incident reflects a reluctance of President Bola Tinubu to learn from the previous administration’s mistakes.
The Federal Government faced backlash after it was revealed that a delegation of 1,411 individuals was sent to COP28. In response, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, clarified that the government funded only 422 persons for the event.
Abure expressed concern about the insensitivity of Tinubu’s government to embark on such a lavish trip while the country grapples with poverty and ongoing debates on the minimum wage.
He remarked, “It is evident that the APC government under President Tinubu is unwilling to deviate from the circumstances that have previously led the nation into economic turmoil.
“How can a country borrowing money for workers’ wages and struggling with insecurity and power failures justify the squandering of such vast resources on a jamboree?”
He continued, “A responsible government should have recognized that borrowing money to attend conferences while wealthy nations sent fewer than 20 delegates was an act of insensitivity and blatant disregard. Nigerians have indicated their stance, and they recognize that the nation’s redemption lies with the Labour Party as we approach future elections.”
