On Friday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun directed Nigerians intending to participate in the upcoming nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their states.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized that while the right to peaceful assembly and protest is constitutionally protected, public safety and order are paramount. He urged protest organizers to provide critical information, including protest routes, assembly points, expected duration, and contact details of leaders and organizers.
Egbetokun also requested that organizers outline measures to prevent the protest from being hijacked by criminal elements and identify ways to isolate potential troublemakers. This information will help the police deploy appropriate personnel and resources to ensure a safe and orderly event.
Additionally, the IG highlighted the need for clear communication channels between the police and protest leaders to address any issues that may arise, and to minimize risks of violence, property damage, or other criminal activities. He encouraged all participants to cooperate with the police, adhere to legal requirements, and follow best practices for peaceful assembly to ensure a successful and safe protest.
