Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will depart for Burkina Faso on Tuesday with a 25-man squad for the WAFU-B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou.
Head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere named the squad for the tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions are in Group B alongside Niger and hosts Burkina Faso.
The Golden Eaglets will open their campaign against Burkina Faso on Saturday, seeking qualification for the continental tournament in Morocco.
The team held its final training session in Nigeria on Monday at the FIFA Goal Project pitch, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade urged the players to follow their coach’s instructions throughout the competition.
“A great opportunity has been given to you all as young footballers to represent Nigeria at the U-17 national team level.
“It is therefore very important for you to do well and excel,” Olopade said.
Olopade expressed confidence that the team would perform strongly and secure qualification for the U-17 AFCON.
He said, “I am very optimistic that this team will not disappoint Nigerians.
“So, play according to what you have learnt under the head coach, and I strongly believe that you will perform very well.”
The squad comprises three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and seven forwards for the competition.
The goalkeepers are Mutiu Adenle, Abdulfatai Seriki and Richard Oguama.
