Ebonyi Supplementary Polls: Winners And Losers

The April 15 supplementary elections in Ebonyi State conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was won and lost by political gladiators including Governor Dave Umahi, who did not contest the elections but had his preferred candidates for the rerun.

INEC had declared elections in some constituencies inconclusive during the February 25 National Assembly and March 18 House of Assembly elections. The commission later fixed April 15 as date for supplementary elections in the constituencies where the elections were declared inconclusive and the elections were later held.

The rerun was tough like the main elections of February 25 and March 18. Four leading parties in the state All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP0, Labour Party (LP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) gave a good account of themselves in contest with three of them winning seats at the polls.

The three parties are APGA which won House of Representatives seat; APC that won some House of Assembly seats and PDP that won House of Assembly seats. The supplementary polls were conducted in Ezza North/Ishielu federal constituency, where APGA defeated APC, PDP and LP; Abakaliki North Constituency, where PDP won; Ivo Constituency, Afikpo North West Constituency, Afikpo South East Constituency and Ezza South Constituency, where APC won.

In Ezza North/Ishielu federal constituency, APGA candidate, Joseph Nwobashi, scored a total of 11,896 votes, while his closest rival, Emmanuel Nwite scored 11,150 votes. The candidates of APC and LP, Nora Alo and Ugota Chinedu garnered 10,085 votes and 8,076 votes, respectively, to place third and fourth.
