Amazon Expands Prime Refunds as New Payments Begin October 1

Millions of additional Amazon Prime customers in the United States are eligible for automatic refunds beginning October 1, 2026, under an expanded settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. A revised court order raises the maximum total payment from $51 to $200 per eligible customer. Consumers do not need to submit claims or complete forms to receive the payments.

The changes follow Amazon’s September 2025 settlement over allegations that it enrolled consumers in Prime without their consent and made cancellation difficult. The $2.5 billion agreement includes $1.5 billion for consumer refunds and a $1 billion civil penalty. Amazon had distributed more than $845 million in refunds by September 2026, according to the FTC.

Eligibility extends to U.S. customers who joined through specified enrollment processes or unsuccessfully attempted to cancel online between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. They must also have used no more than 20 Prime benefits during a qualifying 12-month period after enrollment. Those benefits include qualifying Prime Video and Prime Music usage.

The new payment phase specifically includes customers who used between 11 and 20 benefits within a year and were excluded from earlier distributions. Amazon will issue refunds through PayPal, Venmo or mailed checks. October 1 marks the beginning of this phase, rather than a deadline for every eligible customer to receive payment.

Customers who already accepted earlier refunds could also receive supplemental payments. If accepted payments fall below the required threshold by February 2027, Amazon must issue additional refunds of up to $149, bringing individual totals to a maximum of $200. That supplemental round is scheduled to begin by April 2027.

The FTC says eligible customers should receive their refunds by April 2027, with payments expiring 60 days after issuance. Amazon administers the refund programme, and the FTC is not contacting consumers to arrange payments. Customers should reject demands for processing fees or unsolicited requests for personal information and check the official FTC refund page for guidance.
