FORMER Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, expressed her strong condemnation of the state of the Nigerian Judiciary, particularly the Court of Appeal, asserting that without its decay, Senator Godswill Akpabio would not hold a senatorial position, let alone the esteemed role of Senate President. Oby, as she is commonly known, made this assertion in a post shared on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday.
Oby Ezekwesili, reacting to the conflicting judgments, criticized the judges of the Court of Appeal. She noted the decline in Nigeria’s democracy and pointed out the role of Senator Akpabio, suggesting he should not hold his current position if not for the compromised state of the country’s judiciary.
In her post, Oby Ezekwesili expressed her concern about the erosion of democracy and the alleged corruption of the judiciary by politicians. She reminded Senator Akpabio and others about the vulnerability of empires and cautioned against the unsustainable nature of hubris.
Furthermore, she commended opposition party voices, mentioning Senators such as @SenatorNwoye and @ireti_kingibe, urging them to raise their collective voice on issues affecting the citizens. Oby called on lawmakers to fulfill their duty as representatives of the people and lead the way out of what she referred to as the “Monopoly Democracy” characterized by political class rascality.
Reactions to Oby’s post have been mixed, with some supporting her critique of the judiciary and others questioning the timing and political context of her statements.
