Why I Played Kai Havertz At Left-back – Julian Nagelsmann

GERMANY coach Julian Nagelsmann has explained his decision to play Arsenal’s Kai Havertz at left-back position against Turkey in a friendly tie on Saturday night.

Havertz scored and gave away a penalty while playing as a left-back.

The match ended 3-2 in favour of Turkey as Germany’s woeful preparations for hosting Euro 2024 continued.

It was the first home game for new manager Nagelsmann, but the biggest talking point of the match was the position Havertz was deployed in.

The attacking midfielder has been used in different roles throughout his career – No.10, false-nine, striker, right-winger and most recently under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta deeper in midfield as a No.8.

But Havertz can add another position – left-back- to his CV, in a back four that also included his former Chelsea teammate Antonio Rudiger.

Speaking to RTL before the match, Nagelsmann said: “Kai won’t always be in this position.

“I have a great idea, he is an exceptionally good footballer. This is a very good option. He won’t always play as a classic left-back.”
