THE Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Blessing Alims Iripia, has reacted to an outrage that was sparked on social media following her appointment of 50 aides in her government.

In a post on her Facebook page, she said the robust team drawn from over 20 faculties and 110 departments was needed to cater for the over 42,000 students in the institution.

Blessing Alims added that the appointment of the 50 aides was strictly voluntary, with no financial compensation

In her words, “Thank you for voicing your concerns about the recent appointment of 50 aides by the Office of the Executive President, Students’ Union Government, University of Calabar. This press release seeks to address your concerns and provide clarity on the rationale as follows:

“The Students’ Union Government is tasked with ensuring the welfare and progress of our entire university community. Just as a single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. It is essential to have a strong, and diverse team to implement our initiatives successfully.

“With over 20 faculties and over 110 departments, the University of Calabar is a complex institution. The appointment of 50 aides ensures representation from each faculty and department, which is crucial for effective student mobilization and governance. This approach allows us to address the unique needs of each segment of our student population.

“These appointments are strictly voluntary and come with no financial compensation. They are designed to foster career development, instilling a sense of duty and motivation in the appointees. Each aide underwent a rigorous screening process by the Senate Committee, took an Oath of Office, and is eager to contribute their skills and creativity to the administration.”

Blessing Alims also disclosed that the selection process of the 50 Aides was merit-based, ensuring that each appointee brings valuable expertise to support the administration’s goals.

“We are glad to know that some appointees have received commendations already from national and international organizations they volunteer for. This opportunity matters to our unique population because of its link to strategic community service.

“Be rest assured that these appointments are well-considered and essential for our administration’s success. As we work, be rest assured of our commitment to sharing our progress with you,” she said.
