US Condoles Malawi After VP Chilima Dies In Aircraft Crash

THE United States offered its condolences to Malawi on Tuesday following a tragic aircraft crash that killed 10 individuals, including Vice President Saulos Chilima.

‘Saddened to learn an aircraft carrying Malawian VP Chilima and nine others has crashed,’ US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan wrote on X. ‘The United States offers our deepest condolences, stands by Malawi during this difficult time, and will continue to offer our resolute support in search and recovery operations.’

President Lazarus Chakwera announced that Vice President Chilima and nine others on board a military aircraft that went missing early Monday have all died. The aircraft crashed in a heavily forested area of Chikangawa in the northern city of Mzuzu. The plane was en route back to Lilongwe after failing to land at Mzuzu International Airport due to poor visibility.

Among the victims was former first lady Shanil Muluzi.

President Chakwera addressed the nation on Tuesday, providing details about the crash and the efforts underway in the search and recovery operations. The loss of Vice President Chilima and the other victims marks a significant tragedy for Malawi, with condolences and support pouring in from around the world.
