Unyọñ Ufọk: A Journey Home – Celebrating the Heart of Akwa Ibom Through Art

Nigerian/British photographer and filmmaker, Emily Nkanga

Emily Nkanga, a Nigerian/British photographer and filmmaker, has stated that all is set to herald her upcoming exhibition titled ‘Unyọñ Ufọk’ (Going Home), set to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state in South-South Nigeria.

The exhibition is expected to be graced by the President General, Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Leaders, Ntenyin Dr. Solomon Etuk, Oku Ibom Ibibio, and other distinguished dignitaries. It will open on November 8th till 10th at the Ibom Hall, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and vibrant community life of the Ibibio people.

The project began as a personal tribute during Nkanga’s return to her hometown for her father’s burial in January 2021, and for over two years she collaborated with local communities to document their lives through photography and film.

Through a three-part project comprising a photo book Unyọñ Ufọkand two documentaries Reaching for Gold (released) and From Uyo with Love (showing with the exhibition), Nkanga explores the multifaceted meaning of “going home’’.

The exhibition will feature stunning photography and poignant narratives that highlight local governance structures, traditional monarchy, and unsung heroes within the community.

Emily Nkanga states, “This exhibition is not just about art; it’s about reconnecting with our roots and celebrating the stories that shape our identity’’.

The exhibition, curated by Nnenna Maxine Odumodu, and supported by GOKE, Ibom Air and Champion Breweries, promises to be a significant cultural gathering, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with the art and stories of Akwa Ibom.
