THE United Kingdom has officially opened Africa’s largest Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Ikeja, Lagos, aiming to streamline visa processes for Nigerians. This centre, developed in partnership with VFS Global, the world’s leading outsourcing and technology service specialist, represents a key milestone in improving accessibility and efficiency for visa applicants traveling to the UK.
British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter lauded the strong ties between the UK and Nigeria at the launch, emphasising, ‘Nigeria remains one of our most important partners, and we look forward to VFS Global delivering continually improved services for visa applicants.’
Enhanced services for Nigerian travellers
The Ikeja centre, alongside existing facilities in Abuja and Victoria Island, is part of an expanded network designed to accommodate Nigeria’s growing demand for UK visas. Over the past year, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) processed more than 225,000 applications from Nigerian nationals across different visa categories.
Marc Owen, Director of Visa Services at UKVI, described the centre as a ‘significant milestone’ in providing world-class visa services, reflecting the UK’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
Alok Singhal, Head of Sub-Saharan Africa at VFS Global, highlighted the longstanding collaboration with UKVI since 2003. He assured travellers of ‘best-in-class services,’ which include optional premium offerings such as document upload support, courier services, and mobile visa services for Abuja residents.
Commitment to innovation and accessibility
The British Deputy High Commissioner confirmed that while additional services such as after-hours submissions and SMS updates are available, these do not influence processing times or decisions. Instead, they aim to provide convenience and flexibility for applicants.
The new Ikeja VAC not only signals the UK’s dedication to improving visa accessibility but also reinforces its broader commitment to fostering a robust partnership with Nigeria. As visa demand continues to rise, this centre is expected to handle applications efficiently, enhancing the travel experience for Nigerians.
The UK’s investment in Africa’s largest VAC in Lagos underscores its strategic focus on bolstering ties with Nigeria while ensuring efficient service delivery for its citizens.
