A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced two traders, to a term of two years each at the Correctional Centre, for stealing a phone.
The convicts are: Abba Hassan 20; and Paul Chimechi, 28.
They had both pleaded guilty to a two- count charge of conspiracy and stealing preferred against them by the police.
The Magistrate, Mrs Irene Pati, convicted and sentenced the convicts to a term of one year imprisonment each for the offence of conspiracy, with an option of N30,000 fine.
The court sentenced them to a term of one year imprisonment each for the offence of stealing, with an option of N50,000 fine.
The court held that the sentences shall run concurrently.
Pati, also ordered the convicts to pay N125,000 each, as compensation to the complainant, or return the phone.
During review of the facts, the prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that a complainant, one Mr Casmir Onwunchuruba, reported the case on April 4, at the “A”Police station in Jos.
Gokwat said the convicts conspired to steal the phone valued at N250,000 from the complainant’s car and sold same at the rate of N40,000 to one Musa who is now at large.
The offences contravene the provisions of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
