Sokoto Assembly Passes Bill for LG Economic Planning Board

THE Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday passed an Executive Bill to establish a Local Government Economic Planning Board in the state.

The development followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Alhaji Bello Idris (APC–Gwadabawa North), after the assembly adopted the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The report of the committee as presented by the committee’s Chairman, Alhaji Saidu Ibrahim (APC–Sabon Birni South).

He said that the committee recommended the inclusion of a representative from the Sultanate Council in the composition of the Joint State and Local Governments Security Trust Fund Board and Administration.

“There is a need to capture the contributions to be made by the local governments to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SSPHCDA).

“Also, there is a need to make provision for contributions to the State Assembly for the purpose of processing local government budgets and carrying out oversight functions,” he stated.

The lawmakers unanimously adopted the report and the Speaker, Alhaji Tukur Bala, put the motion for the bill to a voice vote, which was passed by the members.

In a related development, the assembly had passed a bill to establish the functions and administration of local government councils in the state.

The motion for the passage of this executive bill was also moved by the majority leader following the consideration of a report presented by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
