THE recent dispute between the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Rivers State Sole Administrator over a N300,000,000 donation by the Rivers State Government, highlights critical gaps in accountability and strategic judgment. As a body tasked with safeguarding public interest, the NBA must urgently recalibrate its approach to transparency and political neutrality to maintain its moral authority.
The NBA must make sure that it discloses details of donations, sponsorships, and donors for its events going forward. Transparency is not optional for an institution entrusted with upholding justice, it is foundational.
Openness about financial dealings would disarm critics and align the NBA with global best practices for ethical governance.
By modeling accountability, the NBA reinforces its role as a watchdog for democratic values, setting a precedent for other institutions.
The NBA’s constitutional duty to promote the rule of law extends to its internal operations. Not publishing donor details contradicts this very principle.
The absence of such transparency in this controversy may needlessly erode public confidence. A proactive disclosure policy would have averted this debacle.
The decision to move the event to Enugu State ostensibly as a means of protesting the controversial imposition of a dictatorship over elected government, was a missed opportunity to affirm the NBA’s principles.
Rather than capitulating to pressure, the association should have proceeded with the event in Rivers State, while excluding the Sole Administrator, by not inviting him to declare open the event and this would have sent a powerful message. It would have demonstrated solidarity with citizens affected by the suspension of democratic structures, without legitimizing contested leadership.
Remaining in Rivers State would have underscored the NBA’s commitment to justice within conflict zones, not just in politically convenient spaces. Relocating to Enugu, by contrast, risks perceptions of evasion or complicity.
The NBA’s role is not to sidestep controversy but to navigate it with integrity. Retreating to Enugu undermines its stance as a fearless advocate for democracy.
The NBA’s credibility hinges on its willingness to act as a beacon of accountability and courage. By embracing radical transparency and refusing to shrink from principled stands, the association can maintain its moral leadership.
