IN the year 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, called for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to pursue regional integration.
During the commencement of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Second Ordinary Session in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Deputy Senate President Jibirn Barau, emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in Africa.
He expressed hope that the discussions during the session would leave a lasting impact, inspiring future generations.
Addressing the parliamentarians, he stressed their role in representing the aspirations and hopes of the people of West Africa, particularly those who have endured significant hardships.
He acknowledged the leadership of the Speaker and the achievements in opening new avenues for cross-regional cooperation and integration.
Tinubu also highlighted the accomplishments of the European Economic Community, citing the establishment of a common currency, maintenance of peace, and elimination of passport control within the Schengen area.
The session’s agenda includes discussions on the Consolidated Community Budget for 2024 and the status of the ECOWAS Integration and Development Programme.
