NYSC: Army pledges stronger security for corps members

The Nigerian Army has pledged to strengthen security measures to protect National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to Rivers for orientation exercises.

Maj.-Gen. Everest Okoro, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, gave the assurance during an NYSC delegation’s visit to the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Okoro described the NYSC scheme as a national asset that promotes unity and benefits Nigerians.

He said the scheme provided an important platform for national cohesion and fostered understanding among young Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.

The GOC, however, expressed concern over security risks increasingly faced by corps members travelling to their places of primary assignment across the country.

“The division will continue to strengthen security measures to address threats to corps members, particularly during their arrival in Rivers for orientation exercises,” he assured.

Okoro commended the NYSC and corps members for promoting nation-building, national unity and cultural integration across ethnic and linguistic groups.

He also praised the Rivers NYSC Coordinator, Mr Moses Oleghe, for collaborating with the Nigerian Army to strengthen the scheme.

Okoro described Oleghe as a dedicated officer committed to his responsibilities and sustaining the relationship between both institutions.

Earlier, Oleghe thanked the GOC for supporting the NYSC scheme, noting that he had demonstrated commitment in spite of his recent posting to the state.

He said the visit was intended to strengthen the existing relationship and cooperation between the NYSC and the 6 Division.

Oleghe appealed to the GOC to sustain his support for the scheme and maintain an open-door policy to facilitate continued collaboration.

He said a stronger partnership between the NYSC and the Nigerian Army would enhance the safety and well-being of corps members serving in Rivers.
