THREE Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) troops in Cameroon and Nigeria, as Operation Lake Sanity II continues to yield positive results in the fight against insurgency in the Lake Chad region.
According to Chief Military Public Information Officer HQ MNJTF, Ndjamena, Chad Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, in Cameroon’s Sector 1, two terrorists, Rawagana Mustapha (18) and Mustapha Ali (20), surrendered to the troops at Wulgo.
The surrender of these young fighters highlights the ongoing impact of MNJTF’s efforts to weaken Boko Haram’s influence in the area.
In Nigeria’s Sector 3, Ibrahim Malam (28) surrendered to the 403 Amphibious Brigade in Baga.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Malam had been a Boko Haram fighter for six years, living in Kwaleram, south of Lake Chad.
His decision to surrender underscores the increasing pressure on Boko Haram fighters as MNJTF operations intensify.
Operation Lake Sanity II, a coordinated effort by MNJTF member countries, aims to dismantle Boko Haram and restore peace to the region.
The operation has seen significant successes, with numerous terrorists surrendering and substantial territories reclaimed from insurgent control.
MNJTF continues to urge other terrorists to surrender and lay down their arms.
The task force emphasizes that surrendering offers a path to peace and reintegration into society, contributing to the region’s stability and prosperity.
The MNJTF also says that surrendered terrorists will be treated humanely, in accordance with international laws and standards.
Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, Chief Military Public Information Officer at MNJTF Headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, stated, “The surrender of these terrorists is a testament to the relentless efforts of the MNJTF troops in bringing an end to the insurgency. We call on all remaining fighters to embrace peace and join us in rebuilding our communities.”
The MNJTF, comprising troops from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Benin, remains committed to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety and security of the Lake Chad Basin. The task force’s operations are supported by local and international partners, working collaboratively to address the root causes of terrorism and promote long-term peace in the region.
The surrendering terrorists will undergo debriefing and rehabilitation processes, aimed at facilitating their reintegration into society.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the socio-economic conditions that fuel extremism and to provide alternative livelihoods for former fighters.
The MNJTF’s call for more surrenders is a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace and security in the Lake Chad Basin. The task force remains vigilant and dedicated to its mission, ensuring that the gains made in Operation Lake Sanity II are sustained and built upon.
