Kenya has launched the Pioneer Affordable Housing Project in Eldoret City, featuring 2,148 homes alongside commercial facilities and fibre-optic infrastructure as the government seeks to integrate digital connectivity into affordable housing developments.
President William Samoei Ruto officially handed over and launched the project, according to Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, Principal Secretary of the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy. The development was conceived in January 2024 and comprises 15 residential blocks.
Beyond housing delivery, the project has supported job creation and provided opportunities for local Jua Kali artisans and businesses. It also includes 104 commercial shops, a supermarket, a clinic, a kindergarten and recreational facilities.
Tanui said the integration of fibre-optic infrastructure would provide residents with reliable digital connectivity, supporting access to online services, remote work, digital entrepreneurship and opportunities in the gig economy.
The development aligns with Kenya’s broader Digital Superhighway agenda, which aims to expand fibre-optic connectivity, public Wi-Fi and digital hubs across the country. The government is seeking to make digital infrastructure an integral part of urban development and ensure residents can access digital opportunities closer to their homes.
As Eldoret advances as Kenya’s fifth city, the Pioneer project demonstrates the government’s approach to combining affordable housing with digital infrastructure, employment opportunities and essential services to support urban development.
