How To Bake Like A Pro: Baking 101

Baking is the act of making food using an oven, hot ashes, or on hot stones. The most common baked food is bread; however, various types of food are baked. Here are some baking tips for beginners. These can help you in your journey to becoming a seasoned baker.

Read the recipe thoroughly.

You need to read the recipe completely before you start baking to know what you will need, the condition of each ingredient, and how much time is needed to complete the whole process.

Use cookie dough scoop.

Always remember that you need to correctly portion your cake batter or cookie dough every time to ensure evenly baked goods.

Use parchment paper or silicone baking mat.

Parchment paper or silicone baking mate is more reliable than greasing your pans. They create a no-stick divider between the pan and the baked goods. They also allow the transfer of baked goods from the pan without breaking them or tearing them apart.

Know your oven.

Oven temperatures differ, so to ensure that your baked goods are cooked the way it should be, check your baked goods regularly.

 

Do the toothpick test.

 

Always do the toothpick test. Insert a toothpick into your baked goods’ center to determine if it is finished or needs more time. If the toothpick has a wet batter, it needs more time to bake. If it comes out clean, baking is complete.

 

Recipe for Beginners

 

Here is a simple recipe for first-time bakers. It’s a vanilla cake that you can do at home, with your friends or family.

Vanilla Cake

 

Ingredients:

 

2 sticks unsalted butter (room temperature)

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 ¼ cups sugar

4 large eggs (room temperature)

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 ¼ cups whole milk or ¾ cup heavy cream mixed with ½ cup water

 

Directions:

 

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Placed the parchment paper at the bottom of the two 9-inch round cake pan and butter the parchment paper and the pan. Dust the sides of the pan with flour and take off excess flour.

 

Step 2: Whisk all the dry ingredients in a bowl until well combined. In an electric mixer, beat the butter and the sugar at medium-high speed for about 3 minutes or until fluffy. Reduce the speed to medium. Add the eggs (one at a time). Scrape the sides of the bowl to incorporate all the ingredients. Add in vanilla. Add the dry ingredients in batches (around 3 batches), alternating with the milk (begin and end with flour) until smooth.

 

Step 3: Transfer the batter into the pans equally, then bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Do the toothpick test. Once you are done, take it out from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes. Take it out from the pan and let it cool completely onto the cooling rack. Remove the parchment and trim the cake tops with a serrated knife.
