A coalition of patriots, Working People United (WOPU), has honoured Rep. Leke Abejide with its Responsible Citizen Seal award for his support for responsible leadership and national development.

This is contained in a statement made available to NAN by the Media Directorate of WOPU in Abuja on Sunday.

The coalition, comprising organised labour, professionals, artisans, traders and stakeholders, presented the award during a courtesy visit to the lawmaker, as part of its nationwide stakeholder engagement programme.

Newsextra24 reports that Abejide is representing Yagba Federal Constituency of in Kogi in the House of Representatives.

The National Coordinator-General of WOPU, Williams Akporeha, who led the delegation, said the movement was uniting with organised labour, professionals and working Nigerians to promote constructive engagement with government.

Akporeha said President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, though challenging, remained necessary for Nigeria’s long-term economic recovery, adding that the organisation would sustain grassroots mobilisation nationwide to enlighten citizens.

“Our mission is to encourage engagement, not unnecessary confrontation, while supporting policies that will secure Nigeria’s economic future,” he said.

According to him, WOPU operates a digital membership portal through which Nigerians are registering, adding that the platform has strengthened nationwide participation and organisational coordination.

Akporeha said that more than 20,000 Nigerians had registered within two months, providing verified addresses, National Identification Numbers (NIN)and permanent voter cards (PVCs), with membership continuing increasing.

He said that the movement aimed to build a nationwide membership running into millions, particularly among working Nigerians committed to economic growth, stability and sustainable national development.

Also speaking, Dr Billy Gillis-Harry, the National President of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) and WOPU National Operations Organising Coordinator, described the coalition as an alliance representing strategic sectors of Nigeria’s economy.

Gillis-Harry said WOPU had attracted members from petroleum, maritime, hospitality, transport, telecommunications, civil service and professional bodies, united behind a common national development agenda.

He stated that the organisation had commenced nationwide awareness campaigns, including strategic billboards, to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election and his Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We require political, financial, moral and spiritual support from patriotic Nigerians committed to advancing national progress and sustainable development,” Gillis-Harry said.

Responding, Abejide commended WOPU’s leadership for initiating what he described as a visionary movement aimed at promoting responsible leadership, national unity and sustained economic development.

He pledged to mobilise members of the Customs Union to join WOPU, saying their participation would strengthen the coalition’s growing nationwide membership and influence.

The lawmaker, however, advised the leadership of the organisation to remain united and resist attempts by political opponents to create disunity within it, as its influence continued to expand.

“Politics is dynamic. When people see your strength, they may attempt to divide you. Remain united and speak with one voice,” he stated.

Abejide also announced that he would lead Tinubu’s campaign activities in Kogi, and invited WOPU members to participate in the planned mobilisation exercise.

Newsextra24 reports that Abejide was presented with the Working People United Responsible Citizen Seal Award by Akporeha for his support toward responsible leadership and national development in Nigeria.

Akporeha also informed the lawmaker that WOPU’s leadership would return on a later date to formally decorate him with the organisation’s a Patron plaque in recognition.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration and mobilising nationwide support for Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections.
