Google has launched the first-ever Google Play Indie Games Fund for Africa, committing US$1 million to support independent game developers across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the region’s growing gaming industry by providing funding and technical support to promising local studios seeking to scale their businesses and reach international audiences.
The company said Sub-Saharan Africa is home to a vibrant community of storytellers and game developers, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing gaming markets. However, despite the abundance of creative talent, many independent studios continue to face limited access to investment, hindering their ability to grow and compete globally.
Under the new fund, 10 independent game studios will be selected to receive grants ranging from US$50,000 to US$200,000. In addition to financial support, successful applicants will benefit from dedicated mentorship and hands-on technical guidance designed to help them improve their products, expand their operations and bring their games to a wider global market.
The programme is open to independent developers based in Sub-Saharan Africa who have already launched a mobile, PC or console game. Google said the initiative is intended to help studios build sustainable businesses while showcasing African creativity and innovation on the global gaming stage.
Applications for the Google Play Indie Games Fund are open until 12:00 UTC on 31 July 2026, with interested developers encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and submit their applications through the programme’s official website. The initiative represents Google’s latest investment in Africa’s digital economy and creative industries, with a focus on supporting the next generation of game development talent.
