Ethiopian Airlines Unveils Luxury VIP Jet

ETHIOPIAN Airlines has made its debut in the premium aviation market with the launch of its first VIP-configured aircraft — a Boeing 737-800 Business Jet. The aircraft, revealed in mid-March, marks a bold step into the luxury charter space as the airline seeks to diversify its services and cater to Africa’s growing community of business travellers and investors.

The 15-year-old jet, now registered as ET-BBH, is tailored for high-end private travel and official government use, offering an exclusive alternative to traditional commercial flights.

A flying suite for elite clients

Far from a standard passenger jet, this customised Boeing 737-800 has been transformed into a high-comfort, low-capacity business jet. The cabin features luxurious seating configurations, private lounge-style spaces, and a suite of premium amenities, including high-speed Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, and gourmet in-flight dining.

Designed to serve small, elite groups, the aircraft ensures a seamless travel experience that blends convenience, discretion, and top-tier service.

Strategic move into business aviation

This milestone reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion strategy into business aviation — a growing global segment with strong potential across Africa. The addition of this aircraft allows the airline to meet the bespoke needs of investors, diplomats, and high-net-worth individuals.

Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, described the move as a pivotal part of the carrier’s long-term vision:

‘With the addition of this Boeing 737-800 Business Jet, we are elevating our charter service to new heights, ensuring our customers enjoy unparalleled luxury, convenience, and world-class service.’

Tasew also reaffirmed the airline’s mission to drive connectivity and enable investment opportunities across the continent:

‘This is yet another step in our commitment to fostering business and investment opportunities across Africa and beyond.’

Blending public and private charter use

The aircraft will serve dual functions — providing government transport solutions for Ethiopia’s official delegations while also being available for private charter bookings by premium clients across the region and internationally.

This dual-purpose model reflects a growing trend in African aviation, where airlines are adapting their fleets to offer versatile, high-yield services that align with regional economic growth.

New horizons for Africa’s leading airline

Ethiopian Airlines — consistently ranked among the continent’s top carriers — continues to invest in innovation and service differentiation. The addition of this VIP business jet not only diversifies its fleet but also positions the airline as a competitive player in Africa’s premium aviation space.

As business travel rebounds globally and Africa’s investment landscape expands, Ethiopian Airlines is strategically placing itself at the intersection of mobility, luxury, and economic development.
