Electoral Bill: Senate To Consult With House of Reps, Before Deciding Next Step

The Senate has jettisoned its plans to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of the Electoral Amendment Bill, 2021, despite its repeated threats to move against him.

The decision of the Senate, followed an outcome of its Closed-door session, where it resolved to consult with the House of Representatives in January, before taking a decision.

With the sudden U-turn, the highly-anticipated override of the veto may have reached a dead end.

In a rowdy sesiion, the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan explained that the House of Representatives had proceeded on recess, making it impossible to take appropriate action for now.

Discussions on the President’s refusal of the Bill will commence next year.

You will recall, that the House of Reps adjourned plenary until January 18th next year, barring all Committees from sitting until the House is reconvened.
