THE ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has partnered with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to mobilise €300 million for renewable energy projects across West Africa. This initiative, backed by the EU, aims to drive climate action, expand clean energy access, and support sustainable economic growth in the region.
Major investment in renewable energy
The partnership underscores a commitment to bridging the energy gap in ECOWAS nations, where millions still lack reliable electricity. According to the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, over 500 million people in Africa remain without power, making this investment critical for regional development.
The funding will support various sectors, with a strong focus on:
- Renewable energy – including small and medium-scale photovoltaic (solar) projects.
- Water treatment – ensuring clean water access and sustainable sanitation.
- Sustainable agriculture – enhancing food security and climate resilience.
EIB Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, ‘By mobilising €300 million for clean energy projects, we are empowering ECOWAS nations to build a greener and more sustainable future.’
Driving climate action and economic growth
The financial facility will not only accelerate the transition to green energy but also stimulate job creation and private sector involvement in the region. According to EBID Vice-President for Risk and Control, Dr. Mory Soumahoro, this partnership provides ECOWAS nations with greater access to sustainable financing, which is crucial for economic resilience.
Beyond direct funding, the initiative will include a technical assistance programme focused on climate action training and capacity-building, ensuring long-term benefits for the region.
Alignment with ECOWAS Vision 2050 and SDGs
The investment aligns with the strategic priorities of ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks to foster regional integration, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. It also contributes to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
- Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7)
- Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)
- Sustainable agriculture and food security (SDG 2)
- Climate action (SDG 13)
A step towards a greener future
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in West Africa’s clean energy transition. By encouraging private sector participation and attracting further global investments, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable and economically vibrant future for the ECOWAS region.
