Court dissolves 26-year-old marriage over wife’s infidelity

A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, has dissolved the 26-year-old marriage between Abduljelil Yusuf and his wife, Morufat, over infidelity and frequent fighting.

The court’s president, Mrs O. E. Owoseni, said on Friday that she dissolved the marriage to give peace a chance.

She then awarded custody of the union’s last two children, ages nine and 10, to Yusuf.

“The first four children, ages 25, 23, 21 and 18, can choose who to stay with between their parents; they are of legal age to do so,” she said.

She, however, directed Yusuf to allow Morufat reasonable access to the two children.

The president also restrained Morufat from harassing, threatening, disturbing and interfering with the private life of Yusuf forthwith.

Yusuf, a bricklayer and resident of No. 20 TAS College in Ido area of Ibadan, had filed for divorce claiming he was tired of his wife’s incessant quarrelsome-ness, nonchalant attitude, and waywardness.

“After moving in with me in 1998, Morufat began engaging me in unnecessary domestic fights and quarrels.

“In fact, I once moved out of the house to forestall any unfortunate incident.

“Besides, she had, on four different occasions, packed her belongings out of my home as a result of her troublemaking.

“Worst still, Morufat is promiscuous, and I can no longer cope.

“As if those are not enough, she is not disciplined about childcare because she often takes the children to school late.

“That is the reason I took it upon myself to first take them to school before going to work.

“In addition, I ensure that the children are promptly taken to the hospital once they are ill,” he said.

He also noted that Morufat was destructive in nature, especially when there was a disagreement.

However, despite hearing notices served on her, Morufat did not appear in court for her defence.
