Canada commits C$80m to Ebola response

Canada has committed 80 million Canadian dollars to support the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), strengthening efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further international spread.

The Africa CDC Director-General, Dr Jean Kaseya, made this known on Friday via his official X handle.

Kaseya said that the commitment was highlighted by an Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) representative after meeting Canadian public health officials in Montreal on Thursday.

According to him, the meeting focused on the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC and the recent imported case in Kenya, with both sides stressing the need to accelerate regional response efforts.

He thanked Canada for its solidarity, describing the partnership as vital at a time when international cooperation and decisive action were urgently needed to protect global health security.

Kaseya said he met Nancy Hamzawi, President of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Dr Joss Reimer, Canada’s chief public health officer, to strengthen cooperation on public health security.

According to him, he will return to Africa in the coming days to help coordinate the regional response alongside affected countries and partners.
