A Kaduna State High Court has rejected the bail request filed by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, ordering that he remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as his trial continues.
Newsextra24 reports that the ruling was delivered on Monday by Justice Dirisu Khobo, who held that the application for bail did not meet the legal conditions required for the court to grant the request.
The judge said El-Rufai failed to provide enough credible evidence and supporting documents to convince the court that he should be released while facing trial.
According to the court, the defence also did not prove that there were any special circumstances that would justify granting bail before the conclusion of the case.
For that reason, the application was dismissed.
Although the court refused to release the former governor, it directed the ICPC to allow him unrestricted access to his doctors or any medical facility of his choice within Nigeria whenever he requires medical attention during his detention.
Justice Khobo further ordered that El-Rufai should remain in the custody of the anti-corruption agency until the next stage of the proceedings.
The case was then adjourned to July 7 and July 8 for the continuation of the hearing.
El-Rufai is currently standing trial on a nine-count charge linked to alleged abuse of office and other related offences.
