Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has directed the start of the second phase of renovation at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, Bende Local Government Area
Otti disclosed this on Friday while declaring open the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I orientation course for corps members deployed to Abia.
The governor said the second phase would cover course officials’ quarters, clinic, kitchen and other facilities, alongside additional solar-powered streetlights.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Nwaobilor Ananaba, Otti said his administration was rebuilding infrastructure and strengthening institutions.
He said the efforts were aimed at laying a foundation for a functional state capable of meeting the needs of the people.
Otti assured corps members of his administration’s commitment to their welfare, saying payment of the enhanced state allowance had begun.
“My administration remains committed to your welfare and creating an environment where you can serve effectively and contribute meaningfully,” he said.
He said the government had renovated corps members’ hostels, tarred erosion-damaged internal roads and equipped the NYSC secretariat in Umuahia.
The governor also urged the corps members to respect their oath of allegiance and embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.
He said participation in the programme would equip them with skills capable of promoting self-reliance and reducing dependence on conventional employment.
Otti further directed local government council chairmen to reconstitute NYSC committees to strengthen coordination and support for corps members.
The governor described Abia as a land of commerce, industry and tourism, with hospitable people and attractions including the Azumini Blue River.
He assured the corps members of the state government’s commitment to their security.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Yunusa Tanimu, appealed for speedy implementation of the second renovation phase.
Tanimu also urged the government to urgently intervene over emerging erosion threats within the orientation camp.
He commended Otti for approving the enhanced allowance and providing furniture and air-conditioners for the NYSC secretariat.
The coordinator said the gesture demonstrated the state government’s commitment to youth welfare and support for NYSC operations.
He said the orientation course was designed to instill discipline, teamwork and civic responsibility through drills, lectures and other activities.
Tanimu urged corps members to regard the training as preparation for leadership founded on integrity, responsibility, and self-discipline.
NAN reports that the oath of allegiance was administered to the corps members by Abia Chief Judge Justice Lilian Abai.
Abai was represented at the ceremony by Justice Benson Anya of the state High Court.
